★ジョージア州サバンナで生まれ、ニュージャージー州ニューアークで育ったジェイムス・ムーディ(1925-2010)は、10代の頃に音楽への情熱を育んだ。16歳でアルト・サックスを手にし、ひたすら練習を始めた。テナー・サックスが好きになったのは、それから1年以上後のことだった。1943年から1946年まで陸軍に所属していたムーディは、音楽訓練を受け、楽器の初歩を学んだ。1946年夏に除隊した直後、ムーディはガレスピーのビッグバンドに参加した。
★パーカーやガレスピーの革新的なスタイルと独自のアプローチを融合させたソリストとしての才能は注目を集めた。1949年初頭、かなり落胆したムーディはパリに向かうことを決意し、そこでレコーディング・アーティストとしての成功を収め、マイルス・デイヴィスやマックス・ローチといった著名なミュージシャンとコラボレートした。また、ストックホルムにも行き、スウェーデンのミュージシャンとレコーディングを行った。ヨーロッパでの経験を経て、1951年にアメリカに戻ったムーディは、マーキュリー・レコードと契約し、一夜限りの公演を行う大規模なツアーに乗り出し、一般大衆にジャズの魅力を広める上で極めて重要な役割を果たした。
